Welcome to this web site!

Good physical and mental health is our inalienable right.  Unfortunately, our current scientific paradigm doesn't necessarily lead those who suffer from mental dis-ease (think about that word as two parts) to health.  I believe there is a need for a more holistic approach to better living that incorporates the health of mind, body and spirit, and a growing understanding and integration of who we are--each of us--within our selves, our familes, our communities, our societies, our world, and untimately, our universe.

Started in December 2006, this website begins an exploration of these ideas.
I've begun the site with a look at a variety of mental "health" drugs. Although there may be a place for antidepressants, antipsychotics, Ritalin, lithium, and other similar pharmaceuticals, the implication that these drugs can make someone healthy is misleading.  Indeed, the drug companies don't want you to be "well".  If you are "well", you won't need their product.  Therefore, they heavily promote the "maintenance of wellness" theory, and doctors, who prescribe the drugs to you, are taught to pass on that message.

This idea, of course, assumes 1) that you are sick, and 2) there is a biological basis for your mental dis-ease.  At best, these drugs can supress unwanted symptoms so you can "get on with your life."  Sort of like aspirin and a headache...except aspirin wears off after a few hours, and most mental pharmaceuticals are prescribed for--not hours, days, weeks, or months, but--years!

In addition, there are huge questions regarding their effectiveness, their significant side effects (which can range from mild to deadly), and growing concerns over the often severe withdrawal symptoms. Click on the appropriate pages here.

Other pages on this site explore good health in general, noting that "health" involves a balance of mind, body, and spirit.  These are like a three-legged stool, and if one leg is wobbly, the whole stool becomes unbalanced.  Much of healthy living is understanding how to balance the stool, play the game of life, discover who we are, and figure out what's the point of all this.

Lastly, I want to look at some of the theories that are shaping our understanding of who we are and what our environment really is.  How much of what we think is in our heads?  How much is out there?  Why is it out there?  And what are we here to do/learn/be?  Psychology, physics, spirituality, and philosophy are all merging.  Everything is connected, and this cutting-edge thought is fascinating stuff.

Check back here often.  This website will be an ongoing project with new material and links added regularly.

Jan 18, 2007.  New Zealand's Pharmac announce the phase-out of Aropax (Paxil/Seroxat) to be replaced by a cheaper generic called Loxamine.  According to the press release, approximately 49,000 New Zealanders take Aropax.

Dec 13, 2006. Regarding SSRI and SNRI antidepressants and suicide risk, the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) has just expanded the warning from under-18's to under-25's.  Many argue this is too little, too late. See my page on antidepressants and suicide.

Jan 4, 1007.  Lawsuit claims against Eli Lilly for damage caused by their best-selling anti-psychotic drug Xyprexa now reach at least $1.2 billion, the New York Times reports.  (Read article here.)  The Times has been following this issue since their Dec 17, 2006 front page story calling for congressional hearings following Alex Barenson's expose of Eli Lilly's glossing over of the debilitating hazards of their best-selling anti-psychotic drug Zyprexa and shameless promotion of the drug for off-label use targetted at children and the elderly.  Click here for the 17 Dec NY Times article.
